Dans ce livre Sigrid Weigel nous présente l’analyse détaillée de certains aspects fondamentaux de la production de Walter Benjamin. Organisé en un avant-propos suivi par 10 chapitres divisés en trois grandes parties, le livre aborde une série de questions qui vont du rapport entre le sacré et la création, à l’interprétation de textes de Goethe, Brecht et Kafka, jusqu’à la théorie de l’art, des images et des médias. Paru en Allemagne en 2008, le livre s’est vite imposé comme un de textes de référence sur la pensée de Walter Benjamin ­: avec cette traduction française, il deviendra aussi en France un des livres incontournables pour tous ceux qui s’intéressent à l’œuvre de cet auteur fondamental de la première moitié du XXe siècle.

Sigrid Weigel est philosophe et théoricienne de la littérature et de la culture de renommée internationale. Elle a fondé et dirigé pour longtemps le ZfL (Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung) à Berlin. Entre ses publications principales on trouve des livres en allemand et en anglais sur la pensée de Walter Benjamin (Body-Image and Image-Space: Re-reading Walter Benjamin, 1996), sur la théorie des images (Grammatologie der Bilder, 2015) sur le statut du visage entre arts et culture (Gesichter. Kulturgeschichtliche Szenen aus der Arbeit am Bildnis des Menschen, 2013 et Das Gesicht. Bilder, Medien, Formate, 2017), ainsi que la direction de plusieurs livres collectifs et d’éditions d’auteurs comme Aby Warburg.

The striking actuality of Walter Benjamin’s work does not rest on a supposed “usefulness” of his philosophy for current concerns, but rather on the high “legibility” to which his oeuvre has come in the present. Indeed, this legibility is a function of critique, which unearths the truth-content of a work in a constellation of reading with the present, and assures thereby that the work lives on. Following this methodological tenet, this book approaches Benjamin’s work with two foci: the actuality of his critique of violence, a central and unavoidable topic in the contemporary political-philosophical debate, and the actuality of his critique of experience, which perhaps is not as conspicuous as that of his critique of violence but constitutes, nonetheless, the bedrock upon which his whole philosophy rests.

The book approaches three conceptual tools developed by Benjamin across his work which allowed him to sustain his emancipatory intellectual project and had a powerful influence on contemporary thinkers. The fragment is a tactical concept that seeks to avoid the trap of illusory totalization taken from the early german romanticism and employed in “Kapitalismus als Religion” –whose content is critically related to the insights made by Deleuze in his first published text “Christ and the Bourgeoisie”- that counterpoints Carl Schmitt’s interpretation of “Political Romanticism”, as the beginning of a long and contentious theoretical confrontation whose main stages are examined: the failure of his doctoral thesis is interpreted from the implications of his fragmentary and messianic thinking to analyze the deep differences which opposed radically Benjamin to the Weimar academic system. The threshold as historical and topological notion present since his dissertation and refined through the years made it possible logically and ontologically to consider the indecibility between exception and normality, culture and barbarism. The ghost is a hermeneutical category whose importance grew gradually until it became crucial for the analysis of the capitalistic society and the understanding of modernity as a new type of coalescence between materiality and spectrality. Illusionary phantasmagoria and corporeal bodies, as one of the crucial axes in the “Arcades Projekt”, not entirely developed by Benjamin, given the irruption of the Nazi deadly specters, to explore the way for a renewed understanding of the most famous ghost´s tales in the XIX century, “The Turn of the Screw” by Henry James, to which he made one his most favorable comments.
